I accept. The paperwork is signed, and I can fax it or bring it over.

Mind if I start moving into the apartment tomorrow?

Subject: A job

...as in, I'm taking one. Pete Wisdom offered me a job as system administrator for the think tank he's setting up, and I've decided to accept. I think that I can do a lot of good there.

As regards the team, I don't know what's best. I was figuring you could treat it something like a military reservist. Keep the set of leathers stored, and if you get in a situation that needs every warm body with X-Men training, let me know.

I'm not entirely sure what to say, sir. I hope you don't think poorly of me for this.

This is sudden, but I can see what would attract you to the job - it is a good opportunity. I wish you the best, Doug, I hope you know that.

As for thinking poorly of you... we have to choose our commitments carefully, Doug, given the sort of lives we lead. Even the burdens we pick up with the best of intentions can be crushing at times. I'd rather see you trust your judgement than make choices out of a sense of obligation or anything like that. You've done well here; you'll do well wherever you go.

Good, bring 'em with you, and that's fine, move in whenever.

Remeber I said "About two seconds after you sign"? Here you go:

OK, this functionally makes your our head of IT, or whever you want to call it. Betsy has the details on your official IT budget, and I have a chunk of black funding to chuck your way. If you think we need it, buy it. If you think we need outside contractors hire them, although, you know, not for the secure crap. If at any point you need help with that, talk to me, we'll work something out.

Your first job: We are going to need an extremely bastard clever, and extremely bastard secure database system.

I want a means of tracking what information we get in from what sources, I want a means of attaching trust metrics to those sources, amd I need it all to be geo-tagged and trackable by time, too. We're going to need two versions: the public one that the think tank will use, and the other one. The other one will need to be able to read the think tank data, too.

Basically, I want a means of asking a computer to tell me what suspect crap is going on in a certain part of the world, and it being able to take an educated guess about what's important, or just time critical, and what's not, and rank shit accordingly, and preferably work out where there are dots it doesn't know how to connect up and ask us for more....

We don't he the money or space for a team of analysts, so I'm going to need you to try and short cut a chunk of the work that proper agencies of large teams of people doing. I know it'll be more falliable, but I figure over time you'll come up with ways to refine it.

And when you're done with that, I'd like the moon on a stick.

Pete.
